Massive Surveillance Screening
New York and New Jersey have been hit with more cases of COVID-19 than any single country in the world. Although case numbers have levelled off and death rates are declining, the question of how to safely reopen the economy still remains unclear. Serology tests, in the form of lateral ﬂow assays, are now becoming widely available and may potentially inform patients whether they have been exposed to COVID-19 through the detection of IgG that speciﬁcally binds to the receptor binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. However, these tests cannot determine whether an active infection is ongoing, and thus routine SARS-CoV-2 detection via RT-PCR methods remains the gold standard to detect active infection and recommend isolation of individuals in order to prevent further spread. Unfortunately, the cost of such repeated massive testing efforts will be unsustainable in the foreseeable future. To address this issue, we are testing a strategy of pooling samples and testing entire populations together as one unit. This will cut the cost of testing dramatically and can still pinpoint a susceptible group that would need to undergo individual testing.
The Massive Surveillance Screening program will serve as a line of defense for patient sample testing and aid in the efforts of stopping the spread of COVID-19. We are working on accelerating and automating our testing methods while decreasing costs by testing micro populations together as a unit. By performing massive surveillance screenings, we envision the creation of a pipeline to perform pooled population-based testing that will quickly identify positive cases so that containment measures can be put in place immediately to prevent a major outbreak and allow individuals to return safely to work and other activities. While this will be a valuable tool for all businesses and other organizations, it will be especially important in underserved communities where the outbreak has taken its greatest toll and the resources for ongoing, widespread individual testing simply are not available.
